The Smart Forests project includes four case studies in
Chile
,
Indonesia
, the
Netherlands
, and
India
, co-created with local communities through field schools and workshops.
In Chile, we focused on wildfires and
fire
technologies, collaborating with Fundación Mar Adentro and communities developing fire-prevention
networks
and plans within La Araucanía. This case study demonstrates the transformations in environmental
governance
that smart forest technologies can trigger, since Chile’s public sector relies in part on private infrastructure and networks to monitor and create warnings about fire.
The case study research also suggests the potential for smart forest technologies to enhance forest networks and communities, by sharing knowledge across a broad range of actors from different societal sectors.
The Chile segment from the Smart Forests film, presented below, includes researchers-in-residence at Bosque Pehuén
conservation
area creating new fire-related knowledge and community fire-prevention networks.
