The United Nations declared the Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030) to prevent and recover the degradation of landscapes worldwide. Political, financial, and technical incentives are expected to support the implementation of large-scale actions to achieve the restoration of millions of hectares of degraded lands during this decade. Between the initiatives, FAO has led the development of digital monitoring approaches to support countries to report progress on their restoration targets.

FERM Platform

The Framework for Ecosystem Restoration Monitoring (FERM) offers access to geospatial data and applications for restoration monitoring. This advanced system has been produced in collaboration with experts to help identify gaps and needs to support the mobilization of the UN Decade. While FERM provides a set of techniques for countries to monitor restoration programs and projects, there are still questions on how local knowledge, co-benefits, and place-based cultural relations are included in restoration monitoring systems.
